Ryan, Parker and Ella | calgary childrens photography
Creative play is like a spring that bubbles up from deep within a child.
Slowly… very slowly over the years, I have learned that the portraits of children all together, looking straight at the camera should often happen at the start of the session. To me, it didn’t used to make sense. I wanted to have these portraits after I had gotten to know the children a little bit better, and after they had gotten to know me. The thing is though, once they get to know me, and I get to know them – the playing starts. Once the playing starts, it doesn’t stop.
I used to wonder how on earth I would be able to get another good portrait when little ones when they are so busy. I would run up to them, take one hurried picture and they would be gone… running wherever the wind took them. I’ve learned now that often, these are my favorite pictures, and the parents favorites as well. These are the ones that bring a tear to your eye or a laugh to your belly when you pull them out to look at later in life. Remembering the carefree child, the child that didn’t really care what anyone else thought. The child that ran and jumped and played all for them and no-one else. How awesome is that – how wonderful would it feel to be like that every single day of your life? Learn from your child. Have more fun.
